Dangers of BPA

The dangers of bisphenol A (BPA) have been recognized by health agencies, researchers, and governments around the world. Canada recently banned the use of BPA in baby bottles and lawmakers in Suffolk County, New York have voted to ban the sale of baby bottles and sippy cups made with BPA. Cornell University’s Sprecher Institute has reported that numerous studies suggest a link between BPA and breast cancer.

A number of studies have found that exposure and consumption of BPA may cause developmental toxicity, carcinogenic effects and neurotoxicity.

  • In 2008, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found that the current level of evidence is sufficient to issue a public health warning to reduce BPA exposure for prevention of adverse effects.
  • A 2007 study conducted by The Work Group for Safe Markets found that bisphenol A is a developmental, neural, and reproductive toxicant that mimics estrogen and can interfere with healthy growth and body function.
  • A 2007 report by the Environment California Research and Policy Center found that studies link BPA to a number of health problems including early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes, hyperactivity and impaired learning.

Babies, Bottles and BPA

Many plastic products, including baby bottles, contain polycarbonates, BPA, and/or phthalates. When heated, bottles leach BPA up to 55 times more rapidly than when not heated, according to the University of Cincinnati. Because baby bottles are often heated for sterilization, the potential threat to children’s health is significant.

In addition, a study recently published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal found that the amount of BPA in a baby’s blood is approximately 11 times higher than in adults because of the key liver enzyme that is required to eliminate BPA from the blood and body is lower at birth than it is in a full grown person.
